KARSTIC PHENOMENA

Owing to limestone rocks in the Jurassic, karstic phenomena may occur here. Due to the system of cracks, water may freely wear and make the rocky tunnels deeper. Since water is perfect dissolvent of calcium carbonate, the area of the Upland is surprisingly abundant in caves. In total, they number about 1500. The dripstone arising in the caves was divided into gravitational and anti-gravitational. Gravitational dripstone is made by precipitation of calcite, due to gravitational water run-off. However, anti-gravitational dripstone is made owing to crystallization activity. Anti-gravitational dripstone contains: stalactites, draperies, screens, desert varnish, ribs, cascade dripstone, sheepskin dripstone, bowls called "rice fields", woolen dripstone, stalagmites, dripstone columns, pisolites. Anti-gravitational dripstone includes: mushroom-shaped dripstone, helictites and calcite crystals. The longest Jurassic cave is Wierna, 1027 m. long, further places are taken in turn by: Wierzchowska Górna - 950 m, Szachownica I - 600 m, Szczelina Piętrowa - 400 m, but the deepest is Jaskinia Studnisko cave - 82 m.
